Crowns Q & A

What are crowns?

Dental crowns are crafted from artificial materials that completely cover and protect all visible portions of your natural tooth tissue. They serve multiple purposes and are among the most versatile restoration and cosmetic treatment options.

Dental crowns can:

  • Restore a broken or worn-down tooth
  • Protect a weakened or cracked tooth
  • Cover a tooth that has a large filling or multiple dental procedures
  • Complete a root canal
  • Deliver cosmetic benefits to address problems with color, shape, or alignment
  • Secure a dental bridge in place

Crowns are also used as the visible portion of dental implants. In this case, they are not attached to natural tooth tissue but to the implant itself.

What steps are involved in getting a crown?

A crown procedure involves two separate appointments. At the first appointment, Dr. Park takes detailed impressions of your teeth and bone tissue, which he uses to create a temporary crown until your new crown is ready in around two weeks. If any decay is present, he completes the necessary restorative work prior to fitting your crown.

He may give you a local anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable during your procedure. The tooth is then filed down to make room for the crown to fit perfectly over the surface. He checks your bite and secures the temporary crown with dental cement.

At your second appointment, Dr. Park removes the temporary crown, cleans your tooth, and places your new crown after making sure your bite is accurate. Once your new crown is ready, Dr. Park cements it in place.

Do crowns require special care?

Your new crown does not require any special care, but you should embrace healthy oral hygiene habits to get the most out of your restoration.

Continue to brush and floss daily, and avoid biting down on hard food or other items. Be sure to visit Beaumont Cherry Valley Dental twice a year for your dental check-ups.

Never use your teeth as tools to carry or open things. Avoid chewing ice or biting down on pens or other hard items.

With proper care, you can expect your dental crown to last for many years. If you have questions or concerns, schedule a consultation with Beaumont Cherry Valley Dental online or by phone.
