Dental Implants Q & A
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth. The implant is a titanium root placed in the jawbone. An abutment (tooth inner) screws into the implant and a crown (tooth) sits atop the abutment, matched to your original teeth to be undetectable.
While an implant improves your appearance by disguising unsightly gaps, it serves a more important function: teeth stabilize the facial structure, preventing the jawbone from collapsing. Dental implants perform the same role.
If you’ve lost a tooth and it’s impossible to save the original, Dr. Park recommends dental implants to restore your smile and jaw structure.
Implants replace a single tooth, two or more teeth, or entire arches. Talk to Dr. Park about the best option for you.
When might you need dental implants?
Dental implants are versatile. Dr. Park favors them when replacing lost teeth because, unlike with a dental bridge, there’s no damage to the original teeth on either side of the gap, and they last longer than a bridge. Implants also help resolve joint pain or bite issues caused by the rest of the teeth shifting to fill the space left behind.
Other reasons you might need dental implants include:
- Restoring chewing and digestive function
- Preventing speech development problems
- Restoring and enhancing facial structure
- Securing a denture or bridge
You don’t have to remove dental implants each night; they’re fixed in place, which means they’re a more convenient solution than other prosthetic teeth.
What happens during dental implant treatment?
A dental implant procedure is an investment in the long-term health of your mouth and takes several months, involving multiple visits. Dr. Park takes impressions of your jaw and teeth to determine how much bone, gum tissue, and space is available. If you have insufficient bone, you must first have other treatments to create a stable foundation to support the implant.
Once Dr. Park can move forward with the procedure, he numbs the area and surgically inserts a titanium implant into the jawbone. The site needs to heal and the bone fuse around the implant, anchoring it in place, which takes between two and six months.
When your mouth has healed, Dr. Park makes your crown or artificial tooth. This process takes one to two months to make sure the fit is correct. When the crown is ready, Dr. Park attaches it to the implant and sends you home with detailed care instructions.
